The Discovery Program at Seacoast Christian School
A unique program providing intensive educational therapy for students not achieving their God-given potential!
The discovery program at Seacoast Christian School is designed to provide educational therapy to students of average to above average intelligence who are experiencing difficulty succeeding in the classroom.
Although each student is a unique individual, many children with learning difficulties exhibit similar characteristics. Poor memory, difficulties in math and spelling, weak note taking skills and disorganization are just a few of the indicators that perceptual or cognitive weaknesses may be hindering a student’s ability to meet the demands of the classroom.
Educational therapy, developed by the National Institute for Learning Development, provides intensive perceptual and cognitive stimulation that strengthens those areas of weakness. Interactive language activities are also a strong component of the program.
If testing indicates a student has a learning difficulty, parents are encouraged to enroll their child in the Discovery Program. The testing battery is a two-part process. An educational therapist administers the first section of the battery. This testing is designed to assess your child’s academic strengths and weaknesses. The current charge for the educational assessment at Seacoast Christian School is $250.00. This includes a 3-4 hour testing session, a consultation with your child’s teacher, a written report and a parent, teacher and examiner conference.
A psychologist, of your choosing or one provided through your local school district, administers the second part of the testing battery. He administers the IQ portion of the test. If you choose a psychologist, he will provide you with a price and a written report. Testing done through your local school district is free of charge and takes approximately three months.
Students receive therapy during the school day, twice a week, for eighty-minute sessions. Homework is given. Parents are expected to be actively involved with homework and therapy, observing the six initial sessions and following sessions once a month. The average stay in therapy is three years, though additional years may be necessary.
Students are tested every spring to evaluate their progress in therapy. The annual testing done in the spring is included in the tuition fee. The 2007-2008 tuition fee for educational therapy is $3,000.00. Tuition is payable in 10 monthly installments. The registration and book fee is $75.00.
